Text vs push notification

An SMS text message allows users to send text messages up to 160 characters in length via a text client. Many businesses and organizations use SMS to send reminders, offer codes, special sales discounts, and more.

In contrast, a push notification is a brief message or alert that is "pushed" through an application to recipients who have downloaded that application. The application does not have to be open in order to receive the notification.

ShowingTime is a good example of an app that uses push notifications.  This is very helpful to have in instances where there is an issue with text messages being sent/received by a specific carrier (AT&T, Verizon, etc.).  Even if text messages are being throttled or blocked, push notification will still go through without a problem.
