Security errors on older Mac devices

If you are using a Mac computer (Macbook, iMac, etc.) and are getting a security error when trying to log into SmartMLS, ShowingTime or even other, non-MLS websites, it is very possible that your Mac operating system is too far out of date and your connection to the site is not as secure as it should be.

This is not to say that the SmartMLS site or any of our products are not secure.  It is due to the fact that, since your operating system is very old, it is not capable of running the most recent version of the web browser you are using (usually Safari or Google Chrome). Newer versions of web browsers have more security features built into them to allow you to safely browse websites.  You are not as protected as you could be if you are using an older web browser.

Why is this happening all of a sudden?  I never had any problems up until very recently...

This is happening now because one of the largest providers of security certificates on the internet had its root certificate (the feature that encrypts the connection between your device and the internet and helps ensure that your data is not stolen while in transit) expire on September 30, 2021. With its expiration, the browser can no longer guarantee that your connection to websites remains secure.

Do I have to buy a new computer?

Not necessarily. Depending on how old your Mac is, you may be able to upgrade your Mac and continue using it, securely, for SmartMLS and all other sites.

The first thing to do is check what Mac operating system you are using.
Note: the oldest version of the macOS that is compatible with SmartMLS programs is High Sierra (10.13.6).

Apple releases a new version of the macOS every year.  These upgrades are free to install.

The latest version of the macOS (as of October 2021) is Big Sur.

If you prefer to use the Safari browser, you should also make sure your Safari is version 14 or higher.

After you upgrade your operating system, you should then get the latest version of your browser of choice.

Once your OS and browser are updated, SmartMLS and all of the products that we offer should once again work normally.
